'To make sandwiches more exciting for my young boys I often cut the bread into interesting shapes, but I've pulled out all the stops this time. How can the most stubborn bread hater resist these cute reindeer sandwiches? It takes next to no time to shape and add the simple face to this sandwich. My four year old was so excited to find a reindeer sandwich in his lunchbox, while my husband even took several into work!'

Ingredients

  • 8 slices of bread
  • margarine or butter, if liked
  • 80-100g sliced cooked turkey
  • 4-6 tsp cranberry sauce
  • 8 pretzels
  • 8 raisins
  • 4 cherry tomatoes, or cherries

You will also need a large heart cookie cutter

Method

  1. Take a slice of bread at a time and shape into 8 hearts with your cookie cutter. Your child can probably manage this, with just a little assistance. If you do not own a heart shaped cutter, cut a piece cardboard to size and use as a template.
  2. There's no need to waste the leftover bread - you can turn it into breadcrumbs and pop into the freezer until needed.
  3. If you are using margarine or butter, this is a perfect job for little hands. Pass them a table knife and they can spread it onto the bread for you.
  4. Gather up the turkey and scatter over 4 of the shaped slices of bread.
  5. Your little helper can carefully spoon the cranberry sauce over the turkey. Just a small amount should be enough!
  6. Close the sandwiches by placing the remaining 4 slices of bread on top and gently pressing down.
  7. Now it's time to make your heart shaped sandwiches look like reindeer! The pretzels will be the ears, so tuck them inside the top two corners of the sandwich, add raisins for eyes, add half a cherry tomato or cherry for the nose!
