Are you feeling creative? Of course you are! In Northern Europe – particularly in Norway, Denmark, and Germany – the gift of a little marzipan pig at Christmas or New Year is a way of wishing the recipient good luck and good fortune in the 12 months to come. So take a (marzipan) leaf out of their book and get cracking…This is also a great way of keeping the kids entertained at a party. Let them pop their piggy creation in a bag tied with a pretty ribbon for the party bag treat.


  • A little icing sugar
  • 250g white marzipan
  • A little edible pink food colouring
  • 25g melted chocolate


  • Lightly dust a work surface with icing sugar and gently knead the marzipan until smooth. Add a little edible pink food colouring (you won’t need a lot) and knead until the colour is consistent.

  • Divide into 8 balls, leaving a little spare, and pinch the nose at the front. Using a cocktail stick, make two dots for the nostrils. Repeat for four small trotters and a swirl for the tail. Roll out the spare marzipan into 16 ear shaped pieces, and attach to the pig.

  • Dip the cocktail stick in the chocolate and add two dots for eyes.

Once you have got the hang of pigs, you can create a whole farmyard! Sheep, cows and even bunny rabbits are great fun to make on a rainy day.
