Samantha Womack quits EastEnders

EastEnders actress Samantha Womack has denied she quit the show over the controversial cot death storyline.

The actress, who plays Ronnie Branning in the BBC soap, is to leave the show in a few months and was rumoured to have handed in her resignation after being told of the dramatic plot back in November.

The storyline, shown over the New Year, saw Ronnie losing her son James to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Her character then swapped her dead son for Kat Moon’s newborn baby – leading her to believe that her child had died.

A source told The Sun: ‘The last couple of months at work have been awful for Sam. The first time she read the script, she thought it was wrong and pushed boundaries too far. It was such a sensitive issue; she knew it would cause a huge backlash.

‘She saw the story as a mother first and an actress second, which made her realise things had gone too far.’

Samantha’s agent however denied these claims.

‘There’s no truth whatsoever in any suggestion that Sam is ‘quitting’ EastEnders over the current storyline,’ says the actress’s agent Michael Wiggs.

‘Her contract comes to a natural end later this year and she will be taking a break from the show; this has been agreed with the producers for several months.

‘Sam has had an incredibly happy and fulfilling time on EastEnders over the last few years.

‘She has huge respect for the show, writers and producers and has thoroughly enjoyed playing such a complex role that has been involved in so many tough and challenging storylines.’
