Secret ego-boost?

Did anyone see The Secret Millionaire last night? I just can’t decide if it’s actually a bit wrong.

I don’t like the idea of some rich bloke going round judging how deserving people are. Who is he to decide that one act of kindness is worth £20,000 and another is worth £5,000? And is charity really about someone looking smug on TV?

That said, this week’s episode did bring a tear to my eye when he gave Mothers Against Violence a cheque for £50,000 and promised kids at a Moss Side youth centre a month’s work experience in exchange for passing one GCSE. And that’s my dilemma. Is The Secret Millionaire great feel-good TV, or does it just give a super-rich, part-time do-gooder an ego boost they really didn’t need?
