Skincare expert and celebrity make-up Artist Caroline Frazer’s failsafe steps to squeaky-clean skin…
Step 1: Remove eye make-up
Leaving make-up on overnight is the ultimate skin sin and is likely to result in blocked pores, spots and blemishes. The skin around your eyes is particularly delicate, so it’s vital to remove every last trace of mascara and eyeshadow before retiring to bed.
‘I always use a facial wipe or an eye make-up remover pad with a blob of eye make-up remover on it,’ says Caroline. ‘Gently press the wipe or pad over your eye to dissolve the make-up before sweeping it away. Never rub your eyelids as this can lead to soreness and irritation,’ she advises.
Taking your make-up off can become a bit of a chore, especially if you’re exhausted and just want to slip into bed and snooze. If this sounds like you, then why not keep a packet of facial wipes on your bedside table so you can just whip your make-up off from the comfort of your bed? Make sure you follow this up with a thorough cleanse in the morning, though.
Step 2: Cleanse
Begin by choosing a cleanser that suits your skin type. If you’ve got dry skin, opt for a gentle cleansing milk, or choose a wash-off gel or facial wash if you have oily skin. Cleansing your face regularly promotes circulation and encourages cell renewal by gently exfoliating your skin.
Once you’ve got used to your new cleansing routine, why not make it more of a pampering ritual by turning your bathroom into a mini-spa? ‘I’m a big fan of at-home DIY facials,’ says Caroline. ‘Using a circular motion, take time to thoroughly massage in your chosen cleanser. This will stimulate the skin, bringing oxygen to the surface and giving you a really healthy glow.’
Step 3: Exfoliate
Exfoliating brightens dull skin by banishing old skin cells and unveiling new ones, leaving you looking fresh-faced and glowing. Don’t overdo it by scrubbing too hard, though, as this will leave skin damaged and sore. Using an exfoliating product once a week is enough for most people, although Caroline advises using your daily cleansing routine to polish your skin:
‘I find the best way to exfoliate is daily and gently,’ says Caroline. ‘Take a blob of creamy cleanser and using cotton wool gently massage it into the skin in a circular motion. Not only does this blitz dead skin cells but it also stimulates circulation, bringing oxygen to the surface to create a real glow.’
Step 4: Face mask
Face masks are super-indulgent and the perfect way to finish your cleansing routine. Treating yourself to a mask once a week will not only give you a few peaceful minutes to yourself, but will also soothe, revitalise and deeply cleanse your skin.
There are masks to suit all skin types, but they generally work by drawing out impurities, removing dead skin cells and unclogging pores. Used regularly, this deep-cleansing action will give the rest of your skincare routine a weekly boost, resulting in cleaner, healthier skin.
