Actor Dennis Quaid has announced his engagement to his girlfriend Laura Savoie, after proposing to her in Hawaii.

The 65-year-old movie star, who is well known for his role in the 1998 Disney film Parent Trap, described the moment he popped the question to 26-year-old Laura, saying, “It happened on the very northernmost point of Oahu, at Turtle Bay. It was kind of spontaneous. It was very much a surprise."

Speaking to Extra, Dennis added, “I had the ring in my pocket… It has been kind of a month-and-a-half plan… I wanted it to be private.

“She was actually taking a selfie of us, and I put the ring in front and said, ‘Will you marry me?’, and then she fell down.”

Amid news of Dennis taking things to the next step with a lady almost 40 years his junior, actress Elaine Hendrix, who played his much younger fiancé, Meredith Blake, in Parent Trap made a hilarious reference to the movie on social media.

In the film, a young Lindsay Lohan depicts identical twins determined to break up their father’s relationship and get him back together with their mum after being separated at birth and meeting again at summer camp.

Reacting to the announcement on Twitter, blonde beauty Elaine cheekily wrote, ‘Watch out for those twins. 👯♀️.’

Naturally, lovers of the nineties classic quickly began replying to the comment, finding it hilarious.

I AM CRYING!!! THIS IS THE BEST TWEET IN THE HISTORY OF TWEETS!!! SO SAVAGE & I AM HERE! FOR! IT!!! 😭🙌🏼,’ one wrote.

Ms. hendrix, you are comedy gold and we are not worthy,’ added another.

Meanwhile, a third pointed out another similarity to the movie, highlighting that Dennis is in fact father to twins Zoe and Thomas in real life.

Crap, I was laughing so much at her tweet that I didn’t even consider that he actually HAS twins. It’s getting even weirder!

Congrats to the couple!
