Gemma Atkinson reveals traumatic moment she was rushed to A&E during pregnancy

Gemma Atkinson is about to welcome her first child but has opened up about the terrifying times she has been rushed to hospital following four kidney infections.

The 34-year-old is only a few weeks away from meeting her first bundle of joy, with boyfriend Gorka Marquez, but her pregnancy journey hasn’t been easy.

Strictly Come Dancing star opened up to her one million followers about the health problems she has experienced during her pregnancy.

The former Emmerdale actress, who lost her dad when she was only 17-years-old, shared a picture of a baby meme to Instagram with the words ‘Are you serious?’ to open up about her rush to A&E in April.

The mum-to-be reveals she has been diagnosed with the painful infection again on Wednesday, and has in fact after suffered from four kidney infections during her pregnancy journey.

Today’s post is the glamorous subject of Kidney infections! Yes, I’m going there. I’ve had 3 so far during pregnancy and this morning I was diagnosed with my 4th. The first two I knew nothing about, the third one floored me and I actually ended up in A&E with it back in early April. Apparently some woman are just prone to them (I’m clearly not a doctor but I was told it’s because our uterus is so close to the bladder. It apparently sits directly on top of it and the increased weight can block the drainage of urine causing an infection) The joys! During mine & Gorks cinema trip I started with back ache but Avengers was a long ass movie so I thought maybe that’s why. Alas though last night came the fever, aches, cold sweats and nausea 👍🏼 In fact I pretty much looked like the exorcist 🧟‍♀️ At first I felt a tad embarrassed going to the Docs with just “back ache and sickness” 🙄 but thank God I did. I recognised my symptoms from last time, caught it quickly so it’s not as bad as the last one (thankfully) and its currently being treated. There’s lots of changes happening in our bodies when pregnant and it’s always better to have a check up, for peace of mind if nothing else. The NHS have been wonderful in looking after me but in the nicest way possible I don’t want to see any of them again until I’m due to deliver 😂 🙏

Fans were quick to offer messages of comfort to the star and share their own experiences.

One wrote: ‘I remember having a kidney infection when I was like 7 months pregnant. God it was sooo painful. I thought I was in early labour! Felt a bit silly complaining about it like yourself. But ended up in A&E.’

Another added: ‘I feel your pain, I suffered kidney infections on all of my pregnancies. Drink plenty of water, pass urine, so a funny jiggly dance in the bathroom for 3 mins, try and pass more urine(it actually works) and hopefully that will reduce them. I was only told about the wee night dance on my last pregnancy and I never got another infection after that 👍🏻.’

Gemma announced she was expecting her first child with Gorka Maquez back in February, just a year after the lovebirds confirmed the romance.

The pair met in 2017 when Gemma was a Strictly contestant, but the two weren’t actually dancing partners during the show.
