Midwives urge mums-to-be not to worry about their bikini line before labour

Expectant mothers have been urged by midwives not to panic about about shaving or waxing their bikini line in the run up to their due date.

The comments surfaced on a Reddit thread which was created by a midwife, in which she reassured pregnant women that most practitioners tend not to even notice little details, such as hair down there, in the grand scheme of the birthing process.

The medical professional wrote: 'Please don't worry about pubic hair. We don't even notice as long as you have showered in the last week.'

'As long as the baby can come out, we don't care if you're full bush, bald as a baby, or something exciting like a lightening bolt/vajazzled. I don't even notice anymore.'

The midwife went on to cast away any concerns that the presence of hair might interfere with the medical team's work:

'It doesn't affect stitches or anything to do with our work. If you have a C section we can shave the important part for you with a sterile razor.'

The midwife concluded her reassuring statement by writing: 'Please don't get yourself into an uncomfortable position trying to do something for us, cause we won't even notice. It's like getting your hair done and your husband/friends not even noticing.'

The comments may certainly come as a relief for some expectant mums who might worry about the little detail, with many taking to the thread to agree that it was the last thing on their minds during labour.

One mum wrote: 'As someone whose starting to lose sight of my nether regions without some serious contortions, this is mildly reliving haha...'

Another commented: 'When I was in the hospital I didn't care who looked at my vagina. All sorts of nurses and doctors came in and poked around down there and the last thing I cared about was my pubic hair.'

A gynaecologist also commented underneath the thread to agree with the midwife's advice, writing:

'As an ob/gyn - 100 per cent agreed. And it's not only pubic hair...hemorrhoids, interesting tattoos and piercings in your nether areas... anyone who’s been delivering babies for a few years has seen it all.'

'Aside from safety and some basic hygiene, it really doesn’t bother us.'

Midwives did say, however, that there was one quite surprising thing that they appreciated mothers doing in preparation for labour: wearing a pair of clean socks.

One medical professional wrote: 'I don’t care about shaving but clean socks are always appreciated.'

Another backed up this revelation, confessing: 'Omg yes. Some of the rank holey birth socks that come in'

These statements caused one mum to reassess a midwife's comments during her own labour: 'Is that why the nurse complimented my socks when I was delivering? I mean, they were nice socks but it seemed like an odd thing to comment on at the time.'
